Passion and business
I've never been one to be driven by passion. Most of my life I spent trying to do what I thought I was supposed to do; go to school, get a good job, get married, etc. Now I was never very good at following the rules so I dropped out of college, dated way too many guys without ever having a serious relationship (until my current one ❤), didn't save my pennies...all that good stuff. Somehow I still ended up doing what I was supposed to do. I went back to post-secondary and got a degree in Natural Resource Management. I obtained my Registered Professional Foresters status (this is a big deal btw), I have a good paying job, and yet...my life was lacking a serious passion. I never understood how my boyfriend could watch hours and hours of hunting and fishing videos without ever getting bored, or read ballistics reports for different ammunition for what seems like eternity. I mean really, how much can there be to a bullet's composition and trajectory, right? Turns out there is a lot and his focus is fueled by a passion I had never experienced before.
Then I explored photography in a more serious sense than I ever had before and I fell in love. Head over heels in love with it. I spend hours engulfed in learning, creating, and trying to make it a business that I can feel proud of. In general I am not a very focused person. I can spend maybe 10 minutes focusing on a task before I need a "break" but with photography that isn't a problem. Finally, I found my passion. It took 30 years for me to realize what I love but I found it and I am so grateful.
Why does this matter? Well, I had a conversation this weekend with a woman I know who told me she would never pay my prices for photography because there are cheaper photographers out there and shes happy with essentially iPhone quality photos. We has a really great discussion around photography and how there is a photographer for everyone and every budget out there and that as long as she finds what she is looking for that is ultimately the most important part to me. Further into the conversation she was telling us about this photo she has of some family members from a long time ago and how much it means to her. The conversation continued on to print sizes and quality and how she had to take down some large prints she really loved because when she made them larger the quality wasn't there. In every way possible she contradicted what she had originally said about not seeing the value in investing in a good photographer and she realized it is, in fact, important to her. I may even be making a trip to Montreal in the future to photograph her and her family because that's what is important to her.
So why does this conversation I had warrant an entire blog post? Well, it matters to me (and you) because I'm changing my business model!! I've been focused on making sure I'm in line with other photographers in my area and not going outside of the status quo, but that has prohibited me from being able to provide what I want to provide - an experience (and prints). I understand that not everyone wants an experience, some just want photos and then to be on their way, but I want to build relationships with my clients and provide them with exceptional service.
I want to help you pick your clothing if you want my help. I want to give you makeup tips if you're unsure how you want to do it. I want to help you feel comfortable and enjoy your experience so that I can capture images of you, for you. I want you to have ease of access in booking, receiving documents from me, paying, choosing your photos, and ordering prints. I want to provide prints with EVERY session and not of some predetermined size by me. I want you to choose what matters to you! I want you to walk away from our session feeling like you had everything you needed to help you through the process so that you can enjoy it rather than stress about it.
To do that I have created new packages that all include print credits, I updated my website, invested a ton of time and energy in streamlining my processes. You can now inquire online, sign contracts through email, pay by credit card/etransfer or cash, and order your prints online so you can customize your selection to what suits your needs and desires. I want it to be easy and enjoyable for you in every aspect. Doesn't that sound amazing?!
This is my official roll-out of my new packages, which go live as of now for any future bookings. I will, of course, honour my old pricing system for those who have already booked for 2019. I look forward to working with you under my new business model. Thank-you for all your support to date, it means the world to me. ❤
